7 DAYS ITINERARY route map
DAY 1 –
ARUSHA – MACHAME GATE (1800m asl) – MACHAME CAMP We will pick you up from your overnight hotel in town and drive to Machame gate. The drive takes about 2 hours from Arusha and an hour from Moshi town. After registrations and debriefing at Machame gate; You will start the hike through rain forest full of interesting flora and fauna. Machame camp your first overnight camp is reached after 5 hours of trek. The camp is situated just above the forest line at 3000m above sea level. Dinner and overnight; Machame campsite.
DAY 2 – MACHAME CAMP – SHIRA CAMP Breakfast, start the morning hike across a valley and a stream, hike straight up a steeping ridge for about 3-5 hours. The trail then drops gently into a shallow gorge before you climb more gently onto the moorland of the Shira Plateau. This area is one of the most fascinating places of the Mountain. Beautiful sweeping views across the plateau, and the ancient towering volcanic corn of Shira. Elevation here is at 3,840m asl. Dinner and overnight; Shira campsite.
DAY 3 – SHIRA CAMP - BARRANCO VALLEY CAMP Breakfast, The hike up to the lava tower (4600m above Sea level) is mildly strenuous. The scenery is welcoming as you catch good views of the Great Kibo dome touching the bright blue sky of the cool morning. Picnic lunch at Lava Tower, photos and short rest. 3 to 4 hours to this point. Descend gradually for about 2 hours to Barranco Camp at 3950m asl. Beautiful views of the Barranco wall and the Heim glacier from the camp. Dinner and Overnight; Barranco Campsite.
DAY 4 – BARRANCO VALLEY CAMP – KARANGA VALLEY CAMP Start after breakfast by conquering the Barranco Wall. So called the ‘breakfast wall’. The climb to the top of this wall takes about one and a half hours. A good warm up for the rest of the hike to Karanga Valley which will take you about 2 hours. The trail cuts right across the mountain to Karanga. Altitude 4000m.Lunch at Karanga followed by a good rest. Depart for a short side-track up from the camp and back. Dinner and overnight; Karanga campsite.
DAY 5 – KARANGA VALLEY CAMP – BARAFU CAMP Breakfast, trek on to Barafu camp at 4600m asl. This is the last camp before the last leg to UHURU Peak. The hike picks up altitude which can be felt on the approach to Barafu camp. Dinner and overnight; Barafu campsite.
DAY 6 – BARAFU CAMP – UHURU PEAK – MWEKA CAMP Start for the last leg to UHURU peak by 1215am – After 5 - 6 hours of a steady climb on heavy scree you’ll arrive at Stella Point on the rim of the Kibo Crater. A magnificent sunrise will welcome you to enjoy the beauty of the snows of The Kilimanjaro. After one and one half hour hike on the Southern rim of the Crater you’ll reach UHURU PEAK - The Highest Point in Africa at 5896m above sea level. …You’ve made it to the ‘ROOF OF AFRICA’! Cheers!! Moments will be spent here to take some memorable photos, admire the beautiful views of the Kibo Crater and the dwindling glacier fields. Later on retrace the route down to Barafu Camp for brunch. Hike down to Mweka Camp for overnight. Dinner and overnight; Mweka campsite. alt.
DAY 7 – MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE - ARUSHA/MOSHI. Early breakfast, descend leisurely through beautiful forest to Mweka gate. After Certificate Awards and photos, our transfer vehicle will drive you back to Arusha or Moshi town.

Trekking notes; Camping during the climb; We provide all Camping gears including specious all weather tents. We recommend that you bring your own trekking gears as listed; Warm sleeping bag (- 10’C), Trekking boots (used and comfortable), a warm jacket; Thermo long underwear, Balaclava hat, several pairs of warm socks, a windbreaker jacket, Rain gear, Gaiters, camera, sunglasses and sun creams; warm gloves, a walking stick and adventure medical kit with medicines as recommended by your Doctor. Medical/health matters; Physical training for at least 2 months period in prep for the trek is highly recommended. Consult your Doctor for check-ups and what you should bring in your personal first aid kit. On an occasion of Acute Mountain Sickness and any other high altitude related sickness, it's obligatory to climb down. Our guides are well experienced to tell the symptoms and will advice you accordingly. Report the following conditions to the Guide immediately; dizziness, severe headache, nose bleeding, vomiting, confusion, difficult breathing, blocked nostrils, lung crackles and diarrhea. A specialized Mt. Kilimanjaro rescue team is always on stand-by to provide evacuation. Supporting staff; One trek cook will carter for a group of up to 5 trekkers. He is capable of doing vegetarian meals and will consider your special diet demands. Most lunches are picnic as you’ll be on the trail. An assistant cook will come for a larger group. The supporting crew takes care of all camp chores. Don't worry about putting up or taking down your tent. You're well taken care of 1 Guide and 1 assistant guide will lead the trek. Our Guides are licensed and have received special training from Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park instructors. Number of porters will be provided according to the luggage. Recommended weight for your backpacks to be carried up on the mountain is 20kgs. You will carry your own daypack. Kindly allow 5kgs for this including Cameras. Any extra luggage will be kept in our luggage room in town. Trek Conditions; Muddy or dusty in the forest region. Dusty, bare rocks, light and heavy scree on some parts to the summit. Cold nights, windy and mostly sunny daytime. Occasional light snowing above 3500m. Physically demanding hike to Stella Point from the last camp (Barafu camp). Slower pace and thin air. Much easier hike from Stella Point to UHURU Peak. Long hike back down to Mweka Camp from Uhuru Peak.

Terms and Conditions; The Trek Price is inclusive of:- Park entry fees, camping fees, rescue fees, 3 delicious meals per day, bottled drinking water or treated water from the mountain springs, All Park entry fees, Guide and porters food, fees and salaries, Transport including fuel from Arusha/Moshi town to and from the Park gates.
Extras not included in the price; Items of personal nature, flights (domestic/international) soft drinks, personal travel insurances and evacuation fees, visas and transit visas. Tips to the assisting stuff (highly recommended – customary the Chief guide gets US$ 15 a day and the assistant guide, 10 per and the porters 8 per group)
The trek will start and end in Arusha or Moshi town/s. Nyika Treks & Safaris ltd reserves the right to change climb route if so ordered by the Park Warden due to unavoidable circumstances. e.g. forest fires, storms etc. Claims from trekkers for not provided services or for services of inadequate quality will be considered immediately after the trek. Should the claims be recognized as reasonable, reimbursement for not provided services shall be made. Should a trekker refuse to use all or some services or should the trek be interrupted due to the violation of local legislation on the part of the trekker or for other reasons, no reimbursement for not provided services is made. Force-majeure circumstances (acts of elements, fire, military hostilities, crime, government acts, etc.), as a result of which part or the whole trek is cancelled, shall release Nyika Treks & safaris ltd of any liabilities. Validity of the trek price; April to December 2010 and subject to change if the Parks fees are increased by The Government. Payments; We request a 15% deposit by Bank Telegraphic transfer to secure bookings and the balance can be paid in US $ cash or Euro cash in our office in Arusha before the trek departure or by Credit Card to our Bankers in the US. Or sent by Bank TT at least 15 days before arrival. Once the deposit is received your place in the trek is guaranteed. Cancellation Policy;
All cancellations must be received in writing. If a cancellation is received less than 10 days from date of departure, the trek balance is due in full. If a cancellation is made 45 -30 days prior to the trek date, a refund of 50% of the full amount will be granted. If a cancellation is made 15 days or less, no refund will be granted.
